Perceptio

(2011)

by PMP is an audiovisual concert that investigates the state of our perception towards pollution and climate change in a local context. Perceptio combines cinematics and generative art/ animation with sound and music.

Collecting sound and visual samples from various parts of Singapore, these field recordings are then harmoniously combined with computer generated visuals and sounds to create an immersive experience.

Perceptio journeys through different forms of invisible problems that persist in our everyday or future lives and questions our highly mediated society.

Perceptio is an official commission of the Singapore M1 Fringe Festival 11.

Sonic Graphics/Seeing Sound (2000) by Matt Woolman presents exemplary work from studios around the world in three sections: Notation analyses the use of sign and symbol systems in creating identity and branding for music artists, recording projects and performances; Material considers how products can package the intrinsic nature of the music they contain; and Atmosphere looks at how space and multidimensional environmeaants can be used to visualize sound. A reference section includes studio websites and a glossary. (Thames & Hudson)

Grid Index (2009) by Carsten Nicolai is the first comprehensive visual lexicon of patterns and grid systems. Based upon years of research, artist and musician Carsten Nicolai has discovered and unlocked the visual code for visual systems into a systematic equation of grids and patterns. The accompanying CD contains all of the grids and patterns featured in the publication from the simplest grids made up entirely of squares to the most complex irregular ones with infinitely unpredictable patterns of growth, as editable vector graphic data files. SEE ALSO

8 Switches (2011) by Tim Wright presents six black-and-white microcinematic vignettes of retina-searing, hard-edged, epilepsy-inducing sound and vision; digital hallucinations drained of colour, synchronized to a soundtrack that is relentless and unsentimental. Each new section presents a variation on the same sleek, kinetic minimalism. As each section progresses, the razor-sharp line between a host of binary oppositions—black/white, figure/ground, silence/sound, here/there, on/off — dissolves through sheer velocity. (Entr’acte)

Lichtfront is an design collective based in Cologne, Germany. They have a singular pursuit, and that is to interpret sounds directly through images. This no-bars approach makes it possible to perform live sets and for the VJs to directly react to the rhythm and the feel of the music. The form of the sets corresponds to the handwriting style of each Lichtfront VJ. Therefore there's the incentive, as the set itself demonstrates, to produce for each night a unforgetable visual clip. Audiovisuology: See this sound (2010) - An Interdisciplinary Compendium of Audiovisual Culture. This all-embracing compendium brings together texts on various art forms in which the relationship between sound and image plays a significant role and the techniques used in linking the two. The entire spectrum of audiovisual art and phenomena is presented in 35 dictionary entries. (Cornerhouse)

One Minute Soundsculpture (2009) by Daniel Franke (We Are Chopchop) scored by Ryoji Ikeda and filled with visual shenanigans that correspond to the soundtrack. (We Love You So)

Paul Prudence is an artist and real-time visual performer working with generative and computational systems. He is particularly interested in the ways in which sound, space and form can be synthaesthetically amalgamated.

Paul Prudence has performed and lectured at numerous international shows, festivals and conferences. Researcher and writer at Dataisnature. (Transphormetic)
