Digital Harmony (1980): On the Complementarity of Music and Visual Art – John Whitney, Sr. wanted to create a dialog between "the voices of light and tone." All of his early experiments in film and the development of sound techniques lead toward this end. He felt that music was an integral part of the visual experience; the combination had a long history in man's primitive development and was part of the essence of life. His theories On the complementarity of Music and Visual Art were explained in his book, Digital Harmony, published by McGraw-Hill in 1980. (Paradise 2012)

META/DATA: A Digital Poetics (2007) by pioneering digital artist Mark Amerika mixes (and remixes) personal memoir, net art theory, fictional narrative, satirical reportage, scholarly history, and network-infused language art. META/DATA is a playful, improvisatory, multitrack digital sampling of Amerika's writing from 1993 to 2005 that tells the early history of a net art world gone wild while simultaneously constructing a parallel poetics of net art that complements Amerika's own artistic practice. Optical Poetry (2004) by Dr. William Moritz is the long-awaited, definitive biography of Oskar Fischinger. The result of over 30 years of research on this visionary abstract filmmaker and painter. Hammerhaus (2010) by Kurt Laurenz Theinert (visual piano) and Axel Hanfreich (sequencer). The music is insignificant in the positive sense, autoreferential, and its visual equivalent is the rectangles and lines with which Theinert fills the screen. Hanfreichs Minimalist sounds resonate like impressions from an abstract world that knows no natural noises, not even diagonals but only right and left, top and bottom - as if Mondrian had painted the music. PMP is an audio-visual collective based in Singapore that focuses on the synaesthetic experience where sound and visuals interact in real time, steering away from the notion that audio and visuals are often the by-products of one another. Started in 2009 by Ivan, Felix and Bin, PMP’s music takes the form of minimal electronic music that fuses microsound, glitches and the sound of acoustic instruments. Visually, it is highly distinctive with generative visuals that reacts or controlled in real time. (PMP)

Versum: Go (2010) is created in a realtime three-dimensional audiovisual composition tool programmed by Tarik Barri. It forces both the audience and the composer to look at the music and listen to the visuals. (Tarik Barri)

Craig Allan (*1971) aka Numbercult from Glasgow explores comunication between abstract sound and visual worlds using realtime immersive audiovisual installations, interactive digital scultptures and live performances. He specialises in music production, sound design and real-time generative graphics for large scale media environments. Craig Allan founded the eponymous numbercult record label and has released acclaimed electronic dance music on esteemed record labels around the globe under the moniker Rei Loci. (Numbercult)
