United Visual Artists 

(*2003) are an art and design practice based in London. UVA produce work at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, live performance, moving image and digital installation.

UVA’s team members come from many disciplines including fine art, architecture, communication design, moving image, computer science and engineering. The cross-pollination of diverse skills inspires new fields of exploration, which is core to their ethos. Pushing the boundaries of research, software and engineering with every project, UVA’s work aims above all to be meaningful and engaging.

UVA’s work has been exhibited at institutions including the V&A, the Royal Academy of Art, the South Bank Centre, the Wellcome Collection, Opera North Leeds, Durham Cathedral and The British Library. Their artworks have also toured internationally to cities including Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Yamaguchi, Taipei, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Barcelona. UVA also have large scale permanent art works in Toronto and Istanbul.
UVA’s designs for live performance have led to commissions at venues such as the Tate Modern turbine hall, Madison Square Garden in New York and Trafalgar Square London. UVA have also collaborated with musicians including Massive Attack,
Jay Z, U2, Chemical Brothers and Battles.

In 2007, UVA’s responsive light and sound sculpture Volume won a yellow pencil at the D&AD awards, and featured in the London Design Museum’s Design of the Year show in 2008. Speed of Light was also featured in the London Design of the Year exhibition, showing the best designs of 2010. UVA were awarded a distinction for their kinetic installation Chorus at the 2010 edition of Prix Arts Electronica. In 2011, Speed of Light was awarded a Creative Review Annual and listed in the Annual as Best in Book.

Farbe-Licht-Musik – Synästhesie und Farblichtmusik (2005) by Jörg Jewanski and Natalia Sidler focuses on the research on the color-light-music of Alexander Lászlo who in 1925 achieved overwhelming success with his multimedia show. A short time after his new art form fell into oblivion. The autors of this work revived and developed the experiments of Lászlo: his music has been rediscovered and coupled with actual visuals. The Art of Projectionism (2007) by Frederick Baker (in German) sets out the principles behind his use of projectors in the film making process. He defines a projectionist school of filmmaking and media art. In this publication he also presented Ambient film, a surround experience that can be shown in specially developed cinemas. Robert Seidel (*1977) is an experimental filmmaker and projection artist based in Germany. He began studying biology, but went on to gain a media-design diploma from the Bauhaus University Weimar. His films have been shown in art museums as well as at more than 250 festivals (Prix Ars Electronica, onedotzero, Dotmov, etc.), and honoured with prizes such as an Honorary Award at the KunstFilmBiennale and the prize for Best Experimental Film at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Yannick Jacquet (*1980) lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Originally trained as a graphic artist, he now devotes his time to developing a personal language using video and a wealth of projection techniques. Yannick Jacquet's work is characterised by a desire to break out of the traditional formats of video-projection and finding ways to integrate video into the performance space. These ideas are developed and performed in the form of audiovisual performances, installations and scenography. (Yannick Jacquet)
